Bubble skirts are back, and they’re causing quite the stir. This ’80s-inspired hemline, often divisive in the past, is bubbling up again in the fashion scene. Thanks to the rise of ballet-core fashion, the bubble skirt is shedding its controversial reputation and embracing a chic new identity. Without the ballet-inspired trend taking over, it’s unlikely we’d see this hemline making such a strong comeback. Yet, beyond the ballet-core craze, the bubble skirt’s newfound popularity can be seen everywhere—from the latest runway collections and red carpet looks to trending Instagram reels. The bulbous silhouette is more stylish than ever, proving that fashion loves a good revival.
The Trend
In ‘87, Princess Diana made a grand entrance at the annual Cannes Film Festival, wearing a navy and white bubble skirt underneath a double-breasted blazer.
Though it originated in the ’80s, the bubble skirt had its big moment in the late ’00s and early 2010s, when maximalism was at its peak. During this era, fashion was all about layering and mixing: big belts, skirts over jeans, layering of necklaces, arm warmers, cowboy boots—you name it! The bubble skirt fit perfectly into this “anything goes” aesthetic and was frequently seen on young stars like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and even Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City.
Once the bubble silhouette faded from the spotlight, it was often regarded as one of the worst trends of that period, spoken about in whispers of sartorial regret. But, as with many trends from the ’00s, the bubble skirt has been unearthed from the back of the closet and is ready to shine once again.
How To Wear It
For those who favour timeless, classic looks, pair a cute white mini with a simple black pullover, sleek leather loafers, and polished pearls. It’s crucial to have a few go-to summer outfit formulas for hectic mornings. One must-try combination? A matching set. Consider a balloon midi skirt, like this breezy style from Zara, paired with a coordinating accessories. Complete the look with ballet flats for the office and switch to strappy, lace-up sandals for the weekend.
The 2024 version of the bubble skirt has thankfully evolved from its flashy past. Instead of bold colours, today’s bubble skirts come in more muted tones such as black, cream, and tan. Fabrics like cotton poplin lend a modern touch to the silhouette. Brands like Mango, Zara, Reformation and luxury designers like Miu Miu are leading the way with stylish options. When styling a bubble skirt today, ditch the ’00s accessories like big waist belts and opt for more streamlined pieces. A bubble skirt or dress pairs well with kitten heels, delicate strappy sandals, or sneakers—not stilettos. For a balanced look, try slightly oversized, cropped sweaters, or waistcoats. Adding a long layering piece like a jacket, cardigan, or blazer can also help create a cohesive and stylish ensemble.
The evolution of this once “worst” silhouette into the fashion trend of the season can be most credited to how the styling has been ultimately done. Whether mini or maxi, bubble-gum skirts are here to stay. Will you be tapping into the bubble skirt trend?
